Natural Remedies for Dandruff

Dandruff is a common problem that many people have. Most of the time, it comes from a dry scalp, which can be remedied by using a conditioner or shampoo to moisturize your hair. However, if you don’t want to use those products, there are other ways to get rid of dandruff naturally.

Dandruff is most often associated with the flaky white material that may be seen on the scalp or, more shamefully, on the shoulders of a beautiful black sweater. However, how can you get rid of dandruff? That is something that, unfortunately, the majority of us are unaware of.

Dandruff is more prevalent than you would believe since almost everyone has experienced it at some time in their lives. This is because an excess of dead skin causes dandruff. Still, it may also be caused by various other reasons, including dry winter air, a vitamin-deficient diet, and harsh chemicals found in unhealthy shampoos, even dandruff shampoos that claim to decrease flakes!

Thankfully, I’ll teach you how to get adequately rid of dandruff. Dandruff may be treated with essential oils, homemade scalp masks, meals, vitamins, and more. However, those white flakes will be a distant memory if you apply the natural treatments I describe below.

What Is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a skin condition that affects half of the world’s population and is caused by the growth of lipophilic yeasts of the Malassezia genus. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, dandruff is the excessive shedding of dead skin flakes from the scalp. There may be some irritation as well, but no redness or scabbing is usually seen.

Because of the dry air, dandruff tends to worsen in the autumn and winter while improving in the summer. It is caused by a build-up of dead skin, which is aggravated by a yeast-like organism in many instances. While this bacterium is found on everyone’s scalp, it may cause discomfort if it gets too large.

According to research published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology,

Whether dandruff should be treated as a disease or a disorder is still being debated; nevertheless, dandruff is a non-inflammatory condition. Furthermore, the actual cause of dandruff formation from the typical physiological spectrum of scaling is unknown. Still, it is a common scalp disorder that affects nearly half of the population at pre-pubertal age. Furthermore, it affects people of all genders and ethnicities, indicating that dandruff affects almost everyone at some point in their lives.

According to the research, many natural treatments (such as applying coconut oil for hair) have been reported to have anti-dandruff properties. In most instances, these naturopathic medicines are often encountered in conjunction with synthetic agents. According to studies from India, herbal treatments are equally efficient as synthetic drugs in treating dandruff.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, washing more often improves dandruff. Dandruff may also worsen when you’re worried or nervous, and since dandruff is a normal process, it can’t be cured, but it can usually be managed.

Seborrheic dermatitis, linked to severe dandruff problems, is identified when scaling of the scalp is accompanied by redness or when the redness and flaking extend to produce greasy scaling on the cheeks, eyebrows, or sides of the nose.

Have you heard of cradle cap before? This is another term for dandruff, which is most common among newborns. But there’s no need to be concerned. It’s safe and typically goes away by the age of three.

Dandruff Symptoms and Causes

Dandruff may be caused by a variety of factors, including:

Skin that is dried. Dry skin is, in fact, the most common source of dandruff. Dry skin symptoms and indications are usually seen on other areas of the body, such as your legs and arms.

Oily skin (seborrheic dermatitis). Oily skin, believe it or not, is one of the most common causes of dandruff. It’s characterized by oily red skin with flaky white or yellow scales. It’s also known as seborrheic dermatitis, and it may affect your scalp and other oil gland-rich regions, including your brows, sides of your nose, and backs of your ears.

The breastbone, the groin region, and the armpits may also be impacted. In addition, oily skin may be caused by not washing enough. While it’s essential to avoid over-shampooing to benefit from the natural oils produced by your skin, if you don’t wash your hair regularly, oils and skin cells from your scalp may build up and create dandruff. In most instances, cleaning every 2–3 days is appropriate.

Skin problems. Eczema and psoriasis sufferers are often known to have dandruff since both of these diseases are characterized by dry skin, which is often severe and unpleasant.

The fungus looks like yeast (Malassezia). Malassezia is found on most people’s scalps, although it may irritate them. This irritation may cause additional skin cells to develop, which then die and fall off, resulting in the white flakiness you see in your hair or on your clothing.

Products for hair care. Chemical components in most hair care products may cause your scalp to become red, itchy, and scaly. In addition, shampooing your hair too often or using too many styling products may irritate your scalp and lead to dandruff.

Natural Remedies

1. Drink plenty of water

Dry skin is often caused by a lack of water in our bodies, and this is one of the many reasons to drink water! Drinking enough water regularly is critical for your general health as well as the dryness of your skin and scalp.

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has significant antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal effects because it includes medium-chain fatty acids, including lauric acid and capric acid. These characteristics aid in identifying and killing the fungus and any viruses or bacteria that may be present. In many cases, effects may be seen in as little as a week.

3. The Use of Essential Oils

Certain essential oils may genuinely help. Because some of these oils, like coconut oil, have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal characteristics, they may help cure infections and decrease inflammation. Choose 100% pure essential oils such as lavender, wintergreen, thyme, lemongrass, evergreen, cypress, oregano, and tea tree, which all combat fungus and yeast.

A research of 20–60-year-old individuals with dandruff found that using lemongrass essential oil for seven days substantially decreased their dandruff!

Some of these oils, such as oregano oil, may be used internally if they are 100 percent pure. To create a tonic that you can drink, mix 1–2 drops of oregano oil, lemongrass, and lavender with 4–6 ounces of water.

4. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera has a long history of soothing and healing sore skin. According to New York dermatologist Michele Green, MD, Aloe soothed itchy and scaly skin in individuals with seborrheic dermatitis, a more severe skin disease that may cause dandruff.

5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The olive oil (or coconut oil) in your kitchen cupboard may be beneficial in removing dandruff particles temporarily. Apply a small amount of unrefined organic olive or coconut oil on flaky scalp areas. Allow it to rest for approximately an hour before smoothing it out with a comb or brush.

If you use too much, your hair will get greasy, and you will need to wash it. You may also use a few drops of the essential oils mentioned in this article, and coconut oil may benefit your diet. Just make sure it’s natural and unprocessed.

6. Relax

Depression, worry, and stress are all known to cause skin irritations. At these moments, attempt to be aware of changes in your skin and, more importantly, strive to prevent these emotions by adopting stress-reduction behaviors and methods. For example, try yoga, brief walks or exercises, massage treatment, and diffusing lavender.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

It should come as no surprise that apple cider vinegar (ACV) effectively kills the fungus that causes dandruff. In addition, it is known to offer immediate itch relief and maybe the solution to how to get rid of dandruff with only a few applications.

Massage the scalp with a mixture of equal parts ACV and water. Allow it to rest for a few minutes before rinsing. After 5–7 days, check in with yourself to see whether you see a change. If irritation occurs, stop using it or use it every other day for 7–10 days to see if it improves.

8. Probiotics

What you’re consuming is likely contributing to the issue. So instead, try an excellent probiotic with a lot of benefits. It may not only assist with dandruff, but it can also help with general health by supplying good bacteria to your stomach.

9. Omega 3 fatty acids

Omega-3 foods should be included in your diets, such as fresh, wild-caught salmon or chia seeds. Because omega 3s may assist in supplying much-needed moisture from inside, they may aid in decreasing dandruff.

Furthermore, deficits in omega 3 vitamins, minerals, and other elements may increase the risk of dandruff. Fish oil may be used as a dry scalp treatment for healthy skin and hair to fight dandruff.

Dandruff Hair and Scalp Mask

Essential oils, as I previously said, are excellent for controlling dandruff since many of them have antimicrobial qualities. Another way to get rid of dandruff is to try this recipe!

It may be used in two to three different ways. First, you may double the recipe and keep it for 10 days in an airtight jar.

Ingredients:

  • 8 drops cedarwood essential oil
  • 8 drops rosemary essential oil

  • 1 teaspoon honey from the area

Directions:

  1. In a container, thoroughly combine the ingredients.
  2. Massage the scalp with your fingers.
  3. Allow at least 20 minutes for the treatment to take effect.
  4. If you’re in a pinch, consider leaving it on all night.
  5. Shampoo thoroughly.

What to Avoid

Dangerous compounds are included in many commercial shampoos, and dandruff shampoos are much worse. Also, avoid parabens, sodium Laureth, and lauryl sulfate in shampoos and hair products.

It’s essential to limit your sugar consumption and avoid processed meals and processed oils like maize, soy, canola, safflower, and sunflower oil if you want to get rid of dandruff.

Dandruff is a skin condition that causes white flakes on the scalp. It can be caused by many factors, such as dryness or irritation from shampooing too often.
